Golf legend Tiger Woods has revealed he has undergone a “successful” back operation as he continues to battle injuries that have hindered his comeback hopes.
The 15-time major champion confirmed that he recently underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, following recurring pain and mobility issues. It marks his seventh back procedure and comes just months after he missed the entire 2025 major season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.
In a statement shared on social media, Woods said:
“After experiencing pain and lack of mobility in my back, I consulted with doctors and surgeons to have tests taken. The scans determined that a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal. I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.”
The 49-year-old last competed at The Open Championship in July 2024, where he carded an opening-round 79 and missed the cut. Since then, his only competitive appearances have come at the PNC Championship with his son Charlie and in TGL exhibition events.
Woods’ absence continues to raise questions about whether he will return to full-time professional golf. Since his car accident in 2021, the former world No.1 has made just 11 PGA Tour starts, often struggling with pain and limited mobility.
He had been expected to appear at The Genesis Invitational earlier this year, but withdrew following the passing of his mother. The five-time Masters champion was also missing from the initial field for his own Hero World Challenge in December, although no official update has been given on whether he plans to return before the end of the year.
Woods turns 50 on December 30, which would make him eligible for the PGA Tour Champions next season — an option many believe could offer him a competitive yet manageable path forward.
Despite his recent challenges, Woods’ legacy remains untouchable. His 15 major victories and 82 PGA Tour wins have cemented his place among the game’s all-time greats, inspiring generations of golfers worldwide.
