Cameron Young produced a brilliant final round performance to win The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, securing the biggest title of his career and underlining his status as one of the top players in world golf.
Starting the final round four shots off the lead, Young kept himself in the mix throughout a tense Sunday before delivering when it mattered most. A crucial birdie at the famous par three 17th put him right in contention, before a huge drive and composed finish at the 18th helped him edge to a one shot victory.
The closing stages were packed with drama. Ludvig Åberg, who had taken a three shot lead into the final round, lost momentum on the back nine, while Matt Fitzpatrick also came up just short after a late bogey. With several Ryder Cup stars and major champions battling it out, it had all the feel of a major championship.
For Young, this win continues a rapid rise. After earning his first PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship last August, he has carried that momentum forward with a string of strong performances this season. Victory at The Players now gives him a huge boost heading into The Masters next month.
Speaking after the win, Young said the atmosphere and pressure of the week felt very similar to a major, making it the ideal preparation for Augusta. His main aim now is simple, to be in contention late on Sunday at The Masters and give himself the chance to challenge for a first major title.
The PGA Tour now stays in Florida for the Valspar Championship, but all eyes will soon begin to turn towards Augusta, where Cameron Young will arrive as one of the form players in the game.
