Spaun Edges MacIntyre in Texas as Masters Week Arrives

JJ Spaun held his nerve to claim a dramatic one-shot victory at the Valero Texas Open, denying Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre a play-off in a tense finish in San Antonio.
Spaun produced a superb final-round 67, featuring three birdies and a brilliant eagle on the back nine, to finish at 17-under-par and secure his second title at the event.
MacIntyre, who had been in control for much of the week at TPC San Antonio, looked set to take it all the way. After completing a weather-delayed third round earlier in the day, he carried a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round.
However, a steady start of nine consecutive pars saw him slip behind the charging Spaun. The Scot reignited his chances in style with a stunning eagle on the 17th, setting up a dramatic final hole.
Needing a birdie to force a play-off, MacIntyre found trouble with his approach from a wet fairway, leaving himself around 30 feet short of the flag. His birdie attempt came up just short, handing Spaun the win.
It’s a tough one to take for MacIntyre, who continues to show he belongs right at the top of the game, while Spaun’s victory marks a return to form after a quiet start to the season.
Matt Wallace and Michael Kim joined MacIntyre in a tie for second on 16-under, while Ludvig Åberg and Andrew Putnam shared fifth place.
All Eyes Now on Augusta
With the Texas Open wrapped up, attention now turns to the first major of the year – The Masters at Augusta National.
The build-up is already well underway, with the world’s best set to tee it up from April 9th. After strong performances in recent weeks, players like MacIntyre and Åberg will be hoping to carry momentum into one of golf’s biggest stages.
Final Thoughts
A brilliant finish in Texas and a reminder of how fine the margins are at the top level.
MacIntyre will feel he let one slip, but his form looks sharp heading into Augusta – and if he keeps knocking on the door, a big win won’t be far away.
For Spaun, it’s a huge confidence boost and perfect timing ahead of Masters week. Join Bonnyton Golf Club today!
