Scottie Scheffler Reigns Supreme at The Open

Scottie Scheffler’s dominance in the world of golf reached new heights at Royal Portrush this weekend, where he claimed his first Claret Jug and fourth major title in just four years. For fans and players alike, it wasn’t a surprise—it felt inevitable.
Arriving at the final round of The Open with a four-shot lead, the world No. 1 never looked back. He posted a steady final-round 68 to win by four shots, reaffirming what many in the sport have already begun to accept: Scottie Scheffler might be entering a Tiger Woods-level era.
"The Bar We're All Trying to Reach"
Rory McIlroy, who finished tied-seventh on home soil, summed it up best:
“None of us could hang with Scottie this week. He’s the bar. Historically, only a few players have had a run like his over the past two or three years.”
Scheffler’s fourth major victory makes him the first world No. 1 to win The Open since Tiger Woods in 2006. Now 29, he has a chance to complete the career Grand Slam next year at the US Open—on his 30th birthday, no less.
Calm, Consistent, Clinical
Scheffler’s week was a masterclass in consistency. Despite a shaky driver in the opening round—he only hit three fairways—he still posted a 68. Then came a stunning 64 on Friday, tying his record for most birdies in a major round.
By Saturday, he was bogey-free with a 67, and on Sunday, he sealed the deal with three birdies in the first five holes. As runner-up Harris English said:
“He’s improved his putting, he's got no real weaknesses. How do you beat this guy?”
A Relentless Work Ethic
Scheffler’s peers have nothing but admiration for his grind. Bryson DeChambeau noted:
“He wasn’t this good in college. He’s figured out a lot. He works so hard—he’s in the gym, he’s practising non-stop.”
That hard work has paid off. Scheffler now has 17 PGA Tour titles in just under four years, holding the No. 1 spot since May 2023.
Golf's Next Great?
The comparisons to Tiger Woods are becoming harder to ignore. Xander Schauffele, who finished seven shots back, said:
“We didn’t expect someone to come through this dominant so soon after Tiger. But here’s Scottie, taking that throne.”
Jon Rahm, who Scheffler displaced as world No. 1, added:
“Very few have done what he’s done. He couldn’t close early in his career, and now he’s closing everything. That gives the rest of us hope.”
Grounded and Driven by Faith
For all his success, Scheffler remains grounded, frequently speaking about the importance of his family and Christian faith. Bryson DeChambeau acknowledged:
“He wants to be the best golfer in the world, but he’s also committed to being the best family man. He’s found a balance that’s admirable.”
What’s Next?
Scheffler heads into the FedExCup Playoffs as the heavy favourite and will anchor Team USA at the Ryder Cup this September. And then in 2026, he’ll chase history—just seven men in the modern era have completed the Grand Slam.
Rory McIlroy summed up the feeling shared across the golfing world:
“He’s not flashy, he just goes about his business. He’s simply the best at executing. You can only watch and admire.”
