World number one Scottie Scheffler put on a masterclass at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas, clinching victory with a commanding eight-shot lead and equalling the PGA Tour record for the lowest 72-hole score.

Scheffler finished the tournament at 31-under-par, recording a final-round 63 to reach a total of 253 strokes—matching the scoring record set by Justin Thomas in 2017 and later equalled by Ludvig Åberg. A birdie on the 18th would have secured the record outright, but his eight-foot putt narrowly missed, leaving him with a share of the historic benchmark.

Playing in front of his home crowd, the American’s performance included an eagle and eight birdies in a round that could have dipped into the 50s, had he managed a three-under finish over the final three holes. A bogey on the 17th was a minor blemish in an otherwise remarkable display.

South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen matched Scheffler’s closing 63 to finish second at 23-under, ahead of Sam Stevens (20-under) and local favourite Jordan Spieth (19-under).

Eight players shared fifth place at 18-under, including Sam Burns, Mark Hubbard and Will Gordon.

The tournament had seen a weather delay earlier in the week, but the final round unfolded without interruption. Scheffler, who held an eight-stroke lead heading into Sunday, remained composed throughout. His front nine included five birdies and an eagle, placing him well on course for a wire-to-wire win—the first in this event since Tom Watson 45 years ago.

Scheffler’s win was made all the more special by the presence of his young son, Bennett, whom he missed last year’s event to welcome. Holding his child post-round, he reflected on his journey from making his professional debut at this very tournament in 2014 to now lifting the trophy.

“It’s hard to put into words. This place means a lot to me,” said Scheffler. “I played well all week and managed to hold off a strong charge from Erik. It’s a special feeling to win here.”

The result provides a timely boost in confidence as Scheffler turns his attention to the upcoming PGA Championship at Quail Hollow later this month.
