Ryan Peake Secures Major Debut at The Open with Fairytale Triumph at New Zealand Open

Former motorcycle gang member Ryan Peake has transformed his life, securing a stunning victory at the New Zealand Open and earning a coveted spot at this year’s Open Championship.

The Australian golfer clinched a one-shot win at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown, carding a final-round 66 to finish 23 under par. His triumph marks an extraordinary turnaround for the 31-year-old, who previously served five years in prison for assault while associated with the Rebels biker gang.

Peake’s participation in the tournament was nearly derailed due to visa complications, only receiving clearance at the start of the week. As a result, he arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday, just two days before the first round on Thursday.

By winning the title, Peake has now secured a place at The Open Championship, set to take place at Royal Portrush in July.
Reflecting on his journey, Peake said: "I've completely changed my life. This is what I do now. I want to be here and just play golf. The story is what it is, but I'm just out here playing golf."

Peake had played amateur golf in his youth and, while in prison, was contacted by renowned coach Ritchie Smith, who encouraged him to pursue the sport competitively.

"I always knew I could do it. It was just a matter of time before I was going to do it," Peake added.

The 31-year-old held his nerve in the final round to avoid a four-man play-off, finishing ahead of runners-up Kazuki Higa, Ian Snyman, and Jack Thompson.

Peake’s inspiring journey from a troubled past to golfing success is set to continue as he prepares to make his major championship debut later this year.
