Potgieter Claims First PGA Tour Victory After Dramatic Five-Hole Play-Off

Aldrich Potgieter announced himself to the golfing world in dramatic style this weekend, claiming his first PGA Tour title at the Rocket Classic in Detroit.

The 20-year-old South African held his nerve through a marathon five-hole play-off, eventually rolling in an 18-foot birdie to edge out Max Greyserman and secure the win at Detroit Golf Club.

Already known for his prodigious length off the tee — averaging over 326 yards — Potgieter lived up to the hype, becoming the ninth first-time winner on tour this season. The youngest player currently on the PGA Tour, Potgieter closed with a steady three-under 69, bringing him to 22 under par, tied with Greyserman and Chris Kirk at the end of regulation play.

Kirk exited the play-off after missing a short putt on the second extra hole, and despite multiple chances for all three competitors, it was Potgieter who finally converted when it mattered most.

A former British Amateur champion and the youngest Korn Ferry Tour winner in history, Potgieter continues to set records, now as the second-youngest player ever to earn a PGA Tour card through the developmental circuit — just behind Jason Day.

Fellow competitor Matt Fitzpatrick also had a notable week, finishing in a tie for eighth after four consistent rounds under 70. It marks a return to form just weeks before The Open Championship, giving hope of a strong showing on British soil.

Elsewhere, Collin Morikawa and Keegan Bradley found themselves further down the leaderboard, with Morikawa still searching for his first win since 2023 and Bradley finishing tied for 41st.

The PGA Tour now moves on to the John Deere Classic, as the countdown to The Open continues.
