Nico Echavarria Triumphs at Zozo Championship, Secures Second PGA Tour Victory
Nico Echavarria edged out Justin Thomas and Max Greyserman to win the Zozo Championship at the Narashino Country Club in Japan, marking his second career victory on the PGA Tour. The Colombian golfer finished with a solid three-under 67, claiming a one-shot win over his closest competitors on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
Echavarria’s victory was clinched with a remarkable finish, birdieing two of the last three holes, including a critical birdie on the 18th. His composure and skill under pressure added to his previous success at the Puerto Rico Open last year, and he shared that his past win helped build the confidence needed to perform at this level. "I took a lot from that and just kept myself calm," said Echavarria after his win. "It was very fun, that was a lot of fun with these two guys battling it out."
A Tight Finish with Thomas and Greyserman
Playing alongside Echavarria in the final group, Justin Thomas delivered a strong performance, closing with a 66. Despite a stellar round, he fell just short of claiming his first PGA Tour title in over two years. "Obviously bummed and disappointed, but I played so well," Thomas remarked. "I hit so many good putts that just didn’t go in—that’s the difference."
Max Greyserman also made a compelling bid for his maiden PGA Tour victory. After taking a one-shot lead with an impressive 30-foot birdie on the 14th, his only birdie on the back nine, Greyserman was unable to maintain his momentum. He finished with a five-under 65, settling for his third runner-up finish in five events. Reflecting on the result, Greyserman said, "I didn’t quite execute down the stretch when I needed to. Nico stepped up there, and he hit a great second shot [on 18]. He earned it."
Echavarria's Journey and Looking Ahead
This win is a testament to Echavarria’s persistence and hard work, as he has navigated through the ups and downs of professional golf. "It's been a lot of work, it's been a lot of rough weeks, but moments like this make everything better," he said. "It's the second win on the PGA Tour—not a lot of people get to win two times."
Echavarria's consistent play throughout the Zozo Championship, combined with his ability to stay composed under pressure, was crucial in his victory. As he hoisted the trophy at the Narashino Country Club, his second career title serves as a beacon of what's possible as he continues to establish himself on the Tour.
What’s Next for the PGA Tour Stars?
The Zozo Championship was a thrilling showcase of talent, with Thomas continuing to show strong form despite not securing a win, and Greyserman solidifying his reputation as one of the Tour's rising stars. Both will be eager to build on their performances as the PGA Tour season progresses, with plenty of opportunities ahead to claim their next titles.
