McIlroy Takes Positives From Strong Start to 2026 in Dubai
Rory McIlroy began his 2026 season with an encouraging performance at the Dubai Invitational, finishing tied third after a week that tested both his resilience and his game. While he ultimately fell two shots short of Nacho Elvira, McIlroy left Dubai Creek Resort confident that the tournament provided valuable lessons as he builds towards the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
The Northern Irishman’s week was a tale of momentum swings. An opening round of 66, featuring four birdies in the closing six holes, signalled strong early-season intent. However, conditions and risk-taking caught up with him in round two, where four visits to the water contributed to a 74 that temporarily knocked him out of contention.
McIlroy responded impressively over the weekend, posting back-to-back rounds of 68 to climb back up the leaderboard. Starting the final day three shots off the lead, he briefly slipped further behind after a mixed opening stretch, only to reignite his challenge with a stunning run of five consecutive birdies from the ninth hole onwards. That surge lifted him into a share of the lead and brought him right back into the title picture.
Despite a closing bogey ending his hopes of victory, McIlroy was able to reflect positively on his performance. Mixing six birdies with three bogeys in the final round, he showed both sharp scoring ability and signs of refinement still to come.
Speaking afterwards, McIlroy explained that his focus throughout the final day was on maximising what he had available rather than forcing a result. He acknowledged that his driving strategy was an area for improvement, particularly as he deliberately leaned heavily on the driver as part of his early-season preparation.
Statistically, McIlroy finished outside the top 20 in driving accuracy, greens in regulation and scrambling across the week, yet still secured a top-five finish in a strong field. It marked the 16th time in the last 20 years that he has started a calendar year with a top-five result, underlining both his consistency and competitiveness.
The Dubai Invitational also served as a testing ground for new equipment, with McIlroy introducing a fresh set of TaylorMade irons and a new golf ball into play. While his ball-striking was not yet at peak sharpness, he highlighted encouraging signs in his short game and putting, which he described as a strong foundation moving forward.
Attention now turns to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, where McIlroy will once again be the pre-tournament favourite. The event holds special significance for him, having secured his first professional victory there as a 19-year-old and adding further wins in 2015, 2023 and 2024. With seven career titles in Dubai, few players boast a stronger record in the region.
As McIlroy looks ahead, his focus is clear: tidying up driving strategy, improving fairway finding, and sharpening distance control with his irons. If those elements fall into place, he is confident he will be firmly in contention once again as the early-season swing continues.
