Swedish golf star Maja Stark claimed her first major title with a composed final-round performance at Erin Hills, outlasting World No. 1 Nelly Korda to win the US Women’s Open by two shots.
Stark, a standout from the Solheim Cup, entered the final round with a slender one-shot lead and held her nerve throughout a tense Sunday. Despite a bogey-bogey finish, her final-round 72 was enough to seal victory at 7-under-par and earn the biggest payday of her career—$2.4 million.
Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda tied for second at 5-under. While Korda produced a strong charge, her hopes faded after a three-putt bogey on the 13th and a missed eagle chance at the par-five 14th. Takeda, meanwhile, faltered late with a bogey on her 17th hole.
Stark became the first European to win the US Women’s Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. Her journey to the trophy included steady play early in the round and a clutch birdie at the 11th that gave her a cushion heading into the challenging closing stretch.
"I honestly didn’t think this was going to be the week," Stark said after her win. "It’s been tough lately, so this just feels huge."
The leaderboard saw some dramatic late movement. Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez, who began the day just one behind Stark, faded with a final-hole triple bogey. England’s Charley Hull briefly contended but fell back to a tie for 12th after dropping three shots in her final four holes. Lottie Woad impressed as the low amateur, finishing in a tie for 31st.
Next up for the LPGA Tour is the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey, with the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship following later this month.
