England’s Matt Fitzpatrick produced a composed and clinical performance to secure victory at the Valspar Championship, marking his first PGA Tour win since 2023.
Fresh from the disappointment of narrowly missing out at The Players Championship the previous week, Fitzpatrick showed resilience and focus to bounce back immediately. He carded weekend rounds of 68 and 69, relying on consistency rather than fireworks, with six birdies and an impressive 30 pars across the final two rounds.
The defining moment came on the demanding 18th hole at the Copperhead Course. Tied at 10-under-par with American David Lipsky, Fitzpatrick struck a precise approach to just inside 14 feet and calmly rolled in the birdie putt to take the lead.
Lipsky, playing in the group behind, had a long putt to force a play-off but came up just short, handing Fitzpatrick a one-shot victory.
England’s Jordan Smith continued his strong form with a five-under 66 to finish third on nine under, while Xander Schauffele surged into contention with a superb final-round 65 to end the week at eight under par. Marco Penge also impressed, briefly challenging before a late bogey saw him finish tied fourth.
Speaking after his win, Fitzpatrick highlighted the importance of maintaining belief following last week’s near miss.
He said he felt his game was in a strong place and was pleased to deliver across all four rounds. He also admitted his final putt was not straightforward, but getting it done made the victory even more satisfying.
The win provides a timely boost in confidence as the season builds toward the first major of the year, with Fitzpatrick now firmly back among the game’s in-form players. Join Bonnyton online today!
