Donald Set to Announce Ryder Cup Captain’s Picks

The countdown to the Ryder Cup is heating up, and all eyes will be on Luke Donald this Monday afternoon when he names his six captain’s picks to complete Team Europe. The announcement will go live at 2pm on Sky Sports.

Europe’s automatic qualifiers were locked in after the Betfred British Masters on August 24. Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard and Tyrrell Hatton have already secured their places in Donald’s squad.

The final six will be revealed from Sky Studios, as Donald looks to put together a side capable of defending Europe’s crown and chasing a rare away win at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26–28.

Among the leading contenders are Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick – all of whom played key roles in Europe’s 16.5–11.5 victory in Rome last year. Jon Rahm, a Ryder Cup stalwart, is also expected to be a strong favourite for one of the spots.

Others still in the running include Matt Wallace, Nicolai Højgaard, Alex Norén, Harry Hall and Marco Penge. Wallace, who finished tied-second at the Omega European Masters on Sunday, was visibly emotional afterwards, vowing never to give up on his Ryder Cup dream. Penge, meanwhile, has already claimed two DP World Tour wins this season and impressed once again in Switzerland.

Team Europe will be finalised soon – and with so much talent in contention, Donald has some big decisions to make.
