Jacob Bridgeman produced a composed yet dramatic finish to secure his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Invitational, holding off a late charge from Rory McIlroy to win by a single shot at Riviera Country Club.

The 26-year-old American began the final round with a commanding six-shot lead and quickly stretched that advantage with birdies at two of his opening three holes. What looked like a comfortable Sunday, however, soon turned into a test of nerve as three bogeys over the closing stretch brought the chasing pack firmly back into contention.

Playing alongside Bridgeman in the final pairing, McIlroy struggled to convert chances on the front nine but ignited his challenge in spectacular fashion with a sensational bunker hole-out at the 12th. Two closing birdies followed, dragging the Northern Irishman to within one stroke and ensuring a tense finish on the iconic Riviera layout.

Bridgeman, to his credit, found a way to get it done. After leaving his first putt short on the final green, he steadied himself to roll in a nervy three-footer for par, sealing a memorable breakthrough victory.

“I made it about as hard as I possibly could at the end,” Bridgeman admitted afterwards. “I couldn’t even feel my hands on the last few greens, but this is incredible. I’m just glad it’s over.”

McIlroy’s closing 67 saw him share second place with Kurt Kitayama, who fired a superb final-round 64 but narrowly missed a birdie chance that would have forced a playoff. Adam Scott posted the lowest round of the day with a 63 to finish fourth on 16-under, while England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Max Greyserman provided two of the shots of the tournament with a slam-dunk eagle and a hole-in-one respectively.

Despite finishing just short, McIlroy took positives from his final-round surge, while acknowledging that a disappointing Saturday left him with too much ground to make up.

The PGA Tour now heads east as the Florida swing begins, but for Jacob Bridgeman, Riviera will always be remembered as the venue where he finally turned promise into silverware.
